Digital Graphic and Web Design Reflection

According to Malone, Riestenberg, and Sundstrom (2011), self-assessment puts the student in the driver’s seat! The student has control over what s/he puts into the assessment. Self-assessment provides an opportunity for student empowerment.

I was looking forward to the EDLD 5366 class, so that I could demonstrate my creative and innovative side.  Week one’s reading assignment really caught me off guard. I did not understand, The Non-Designer Design Book .I was uable to comprehend  the art terminology in the beginning. Some of the examples were confusing. I had to use other resources in order to comprehend what was being asked of me. This activity really opened my eyes into the art and design world. I felt empowerment, and in control of my education.  I was able to discuss the 4 Principles of Design with confidence during my group meetings.

Brand discovery is about figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life, setting goals, writing down a mission, vision, and personal brand statement (what you do and who you serve), as well as creating a development plan. Schawbel, D. (2009). My group project was definitely an example of metacognition and Branding. My group and I really needed to time to look at ourselves as individuals and then as a group in order to complete the Logo assignment.  I felt that what we learned as a group was recognizing the differences in learning styles and our ability to match the appropriate learning strategy to each task.

Analyzing myself as a learner, I would have to say that I went through the process of productive struggle.  I experienced the process of thinking, exploring, making sense, persevering, while not knowing how to proceed or if my approaches would work. Week two’s task was frustrating because I was unable to find a symbol or picture that represented me. Once I found a website that was able to produce the product I wanted, then it would ask for a debit or credit card to purchase the Logo. I went through this several times trying to find free logos, until I was able to pull different symbols from different sources and use Windows Paint to pull everything together.

I feel confident in sharing these new digital tools with my students. I have used several of the e-sources in my Language Arts and Social Studies classes. I have created lesson plans that incorporated Tagxedo, Animoto, and Myhistro. Students had to type in their vocabulary words and definitions in Tagxedo. In my Social Studies class, I asked my students to create Animoto on Thomas Jefferson and his contributions to the United States.
In the beginning of the class, I felt my technical skills were outdated and that I was lacked knowledge on art and design. So I approached every task with the mind set of being a beginner. I was able to extend my understanding of web design strategies and tactics, as well as, adding my professional digital design work to my portfolio.
